Q: What causes Fibromyalgia?
A: The cause is still largely unknown. There is speculation that Fibro may be a pain perception disorder, and that it may be triggered by stress or trauma, but there is nothing medically or clinically conclusive.
Q: How is Fibromyalgia diagnosed?
A: A primary care physician or rheumatologist can diagnose Fibro after ruling out other illnesses, such as Lyme Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus. Fibro itself is diagnosed by pain points and a general picture of pain and fatigue.
Q: I have just received a diagnosis of Fibro. What do I do now?

Q: What is the right diet for Fibro?
A: There is no one right diet for every person, but many people report that eating a gluten-free, sugar-free, dairy-free diet reduces their pain significantly. Try a one-month elimination diet in order to identify your trigger foods.
Q: I’ve heard that meditation can reduce pain, but I don’t know where to start. Can you help me?

Q: My doctor says I need to exercise, but I’m too tired and worried I will feel worse afterward. What should I do?
A: Exercise is absolutely mandatory for everyone, even people with Fibro. I suggest you swim or walk in the pool, and add a gentle yoga class. If a pool is not available, take a 10-15 minute walk every day. Gradually increase the time of your exercise to eventually reach an hour per day.
Q: I’m taking Cymbalta, Gabapentin and oxycodone. I experience horrendous side effects. Should I stop taking them?
A: I suggest you speak very directly with your doctors about the medication side effects. These are well-known by doctors. However, there are not many medications available at this time. There are, however, treatment options that are not drugs. Speak to a functional medicine or integrative medicine practitioner for some ideas.
Q: Is acupuncture good for people with Fibro? I’ve heard it’s painful.
A: A highly skilled doctor of Chinese medicine can treat the pain and other symptoms of Fibro with needles and herbs. I suggest you interview practitioners in advance to make sure they understand the sensitivity of Fibro.
Q: My doctor says Fibro is all in my head. What should I do?
A: Unfortunately, many in the medical field are not well-informed about Fibro. Find another doctor, one who will speak to you and treat you with the compassion you deserve.
Q: My Rheumatologist suggested I try CBT for my Fibro. How does it help?
A: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can help you in a few ways:
- learn to identify what triggers your flares, by tracking a series of lifestyle habits
- identify and change thought patterns that keep you stuck in an unhealthy mindset
- teach you to transform negative thoughts into more positive thoughts
- dismantle the identity you may have built around pain and illness
- support you in learning new ways to deal with stress, set appropriate boundaries and enjoy your life more fully
Q: Does Cannabis help Fibro?
A: While there are no large clinical studies to confirm this yet, many, many people report that cannabis relieves pain. You might want to try CBD oil, which does not contain THC.
Q: I have IBS as well as Fibro. Is that common?
A: Yes. The part of your nervous system that is affected by Fibro pain is also responsible for digestion and sleep regulation. That is why IBS and sleep issues are very common with Fibro.
Q: My partner says it’s all in my head. Is it?
A: Well, it certainly STARTS in your head, which is where the central nervous system begins. But if you are asking if it is imaginary, no, it is not.
