Why Can’t I Sleep?

People with Fibro often suffer from sleep disorders, including non-restorative, non-restful sleep. This is most likely attributable to the vagus nerve, which is responsible for modulating pain, digestion, and regulating sleep cycles.

Sleep is one of the most difficult things to live without. When you don’t have adequate sleep, and your sleep is non-restorative, everything is harder. Your battery is always low, and that makes it even harder to manage pain, to fight brain fog, to exercise, or to nurture your relationships.

The good news is that sleep is one of the easier things to solve. There are number of prescription sleep formulas, as well as over the counter and herbal sleep aids. Homeopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic and cranial-sacral therapy can all help to improve sleep. If you are taking an anti-depressant, ask your doctor if it might be interfering with your sleep. You might be able to take it in the morning instead of evening.

Sometimes anxiety about sleep also hinders our ability to fall asleep. Try removing yourself from screens at least an hour before bedtime. The screens tend to be stimulating rather than relaxing. Use audiobooks or music to relax you, and if you haven’t yet, get a weighted blanket; they are fantastic for anxious sleepers.

One of the most important aspects of good sleep hygiene is learning to sleep the right hours. Unless you work the night shift, you should try to sleep between 11 pm and 8 am.

The first step is to understand exactly where you are with your sleep. Use a tracker to log what time you get into bed and what time you get out of bed. You can also make a note of how long you felt it took you to fall asleep. Make your best guess. The goal is not necessarily to know the exact time, but to note the trend. That way when you speak to your doctor about your sleep issues, you have some data.

If you have tried some of these solutions and still are not getting adequate sleep, you might need a sleep study. Ask your doctor to refer you to a sleep clinic to rule out sleep apnea or anything similar.
